A Tour!

We went home this weekend to visit one of the loves of my life.  My grandfather.  My grandmother was recently put into a nursing home (heartbreaking), and a visit home is always a good fix for me when I’m feeling sad about their aging.

IMG_1942

Of course, another good fix is staying at my mom’s.  While I always knew I was growing up in a beautiful, well-appreciated home, it wasn’t until I became an adult that I appreciated all the work that goes into it.

IMG_1955

As soon as we pull into the driveway, the burst of color and the peaceful sound of water fountains greets us.

IMG_1957

It’s virtually impossible to make it from the car to the front door without stopping to take it all in (and feel envious that your potato vines look nothing like that!).

IMG_1924 IMG_1951

Uhhh…that’s just the front.  Who knows what I was thinking when I didn’t take a picture of the entire yard.  Perhaps I was too focused on my mom’s potting shed. Oh, how I want one of these!

IMG_1929

She has little “centers” all over the yard.  There’s no fixating on just one area, which I think makes it so fun to walk around and take in.

IMG_1926

IMG_1935

Another highlight is her patio.  She lights these globe torches at night, making for an incredible night scene as well.

IMG_1927  IMG_1930

Of course, as you tour the gardens, you’ll spot little hummingbirds, angels, fairies, lady bugs, frogs…you name it.  She’s got an ornamental knack!

IMG_1937

Her shade garden.  Ugh.  I WISH I had a shade garden.

IMG_1932

I only took a couple of pics of her Florida room.  According to her, it’s still in progress.   I’ll have to wait until my next visit to get more, but I would pay good money to have a room just like this!

IMG_1940

She’s not gonna like me for this, but I have to put a picture of her on here.  You need to see the genius behind it all.  That being said, she’d want me to tell you that those are her old, backup glasses.  She’s waiting for her new ones to come in.  I got your back, mom!

Coasters and a Deal!

Well, the cat’s out of the bag.  Silhouette is being incredibly generous and giving away some of their machines throughout blogland.  Don’t we love them?  I’m going to be cruel and make you wait a couple more days before I do my giveaway.  This way, if you don’t win the other giveaways, you’ve still got mine!

Just to show you that I’m not allll mean.  I made a little housewarming gift for my girlfriend who just bought a brand new home!  Lucky girl, right?

IMG_1920

I, of course, turned to my new Silhouette for some help. I started out with these craft mirrors from Hobby Lobby.  They were 30% off, so that’s…well…less than $2.47 for two of them.

IMG_1910

I wanted to find just the right image to etch onto the glass, so I paid a whopping .99 cents for this flower.  LOVE.

IMG_1906

I used the adhesive vinyl, cut out the image, and applied it to the coaster. A little (expensive!) bottle of etching cream was applied. ETA: The etching cream is called Armour Etch, and it was $8.50 for 3oz.  It’s pricey, but I used very little. I imagine it will last quite a long time.

IMG_1907

10 minutes later…voila!

IMG_1908

Here’s another picture ‘cause I think they’re that pretty, and it’s rather difficult taking a picture of a mirrored object!

IMG_1909

After simply slapping some cork on the bottom and wrapping some pretty ribbon around it, I now have a charming and personal gift for my friend!

IMG_1923 She’ll love them!  And even if she doesn’t, she’s nice enough that she’ll lie and say she does.  In the hopes of tiding you over until the giveaway, Silhouette is offering some FANTASTIC promotions for you, as well.  Just enter the code “sweet” once you place your order.

Beautiful Butterflies

Original title, I know.  My Silhouette and I had a great weekend together.  We giggled, had pillow fights, and made crafts together.  It was a hoot.  What I should have made clear earlier is that my Silhouette was given to me by their VERY generous company.

whatIsItHeader

Apparently, they got together at their huge, executive conference table and said, “We must find an innovative mind that can handle this machine and do it justice.”  After that didn’t work out, they must have said, “Well, let’s just find some goofy blogger who gets all sweaty at the thought of using our machine.” Enter ME!

silhouette butterflies

I’ve seen projects like this on  the web, and I’ve always wanted one.  However, the thought of cutting out 36 tiny butterflies was just not appealing to me.  My Silhouette jumped at the chance!  She’s so good to me.

We only argued just a little when the machine wouldn’t measure out exactly where I was supposed to put the butterflies.  I said, “But I’m horrible at measurements!” and she said, “Quit acting like I can talk to you!”  It got weird.

At least the project turned out EXACTLY how I wanted it to!  It’s sooo pretty!

butterflies frame It fits perfectly in the space I had planned for it, and it’s fresh and girly!  Yee Hee!

I’m gonna end this post with a little quiz for you.  Which decoration did I choose for my daughter’s room, and which decoration did she choose?  Not that I blame her or anything.  It’s just not quite the look I was going for.

P.S.  Stay tuned…I’ve got some pretty great announcements coming up that YOU’RE gonna like!

I have a Silhouette, and I’m not afraid to use it!

That’s right, folks.  This new beauty is a part of the Just a Girl household, and consider this fair warning.  I’m filled to the BRIM with ideas, and I imagine you’ll be seeing a lot of them in the future.

IMG_1818

I’ll tell ya right now.  I was so nervous as I turned the machine on that I was seriously sweating.  This whole “be creative—the world is in the palm of your hands” kind of thing was a lot of pressure.  So I decided to start out slow.  Enter: a bag and vinyl.

IMG_1809

Shapoodle!  For $1.78 I now have a personalized Detroit Tigers gift bag AND my husband will think I’m cool for making it.  Because I am cool for making it.

IMG_1812

For the “special” part of the gift, I decided to use some heat transfer to make my own ribbon.  Here’s my Ikea version of directions…

IMG_1820 IMG_1821

Add some trim, let the kids add some stickers, and call it good.  Well, then listen to your husband pout and whine because he wants to open it now.  “It’s not fair to make him wait two days.”

Happy Father’s Day!!
